Gourmet Popcorn Company Pops The Question About Breast Cancer

Gourmet Popcorn company JustPoppin.com creates fund raising program to encourage women to “Pop the Question” to their friends and loved ones about getting a mammogram.

Sarasota County, FL., October 26, 2009 — In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in support of this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event at the Sarasota Polo Club on October 24th, gourmet popcorn company JustPoppin.com created an online fund raising program allowing visitors to its website, www.JustPoppin.com, using coupon code “PopTheQuestion“, to buy gourmet popcorn products knowing that 10% of their purchase price will be donated to the American Cancer Society. JustPoppin.com also provided enough delicious and pink Cranberry Punch popcorn to feed everyone at the Survivors & Caregivers Reception where, in addition to popcorn, “Popping The Question” was on everyone’s lips.

“Pop The Question” was the theme of the reception at the Sarasota Making Strides event Saturday, October 24th. It’s the brainchild of keynote motivational speaker and entertainer Lynn McDonald. To her, Popping The Question about whether a woman has had, or scheduled a mammogram is as important as it gets. “The more often people Pop The Question, the more it will be on the minds of women everywhere, and the more likely they will be to get a mammogram” says McDonald.

The Pop The Question theme seemed an especially perfect fit for the event when JustPoppin.com got on board as a supporter. Lynn McDonald used the pink popcorn to reinforce the Pop The Question theme through out her multifaceted presentation. “We’re happy to have added to this event in support of such an important cause as finding a cure for breast cancer. Won’t it be nice when breast cancer is a thing of the past and “Pop The Question” can go back to referring to only one thing?” says JustPoppin.com principal Jennie Smolow.

She continues, “It was also important for us to be active in this cause going forward. That’s why we created the “PopTheQuestion” coupon code for our online gourmet popcorn store.” Visitors to the website who enter the coupon code “PopTheQuestion” at checkout will be buying delicious gourmet popcorn products and contributing toward programs to find a cure for breast cancer and to encourage women to “PopTheQuestion” about the importance of getting a mammogram.

The JustPoppin.com Pop The Question fund raiser to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness will continue indefinitely.

Ok, here’s the very first posted recipe.  I found it at SheKnows.com I will admit it’s probably not one I would make, but maybe some of you adventurous types will want to give it a try?  Send me an email or comment to this post if you try it!

Truffled and Herbed Popcorn

Makes about 6 to 10 servings

Unusual but oh so good. Popcorn gains gourmet status with a few extra key ingredients. And, yes, you can drink wine with popcorn! Pack your picnic basket with bags of this gourmet snack and you might even be tempted to skip the main meal.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup unpopped popcorn kernels
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 tablespoon white or black truffle oil
Kosher salt to taste, plus black truffle salt to taste
1 tablespoon each finely chopped fresh rosemary and fresh thyme

Preparation:
1. Air pop the popcorn, in batches if needed.

2. For the herbed popcorn: Drizzle two tablespoons of the unsalted butter over half the popped corn, tossing as you drizzle to distribute the butter evenly. Immediately sprinkle with the chopped herbs and salt to taste, tossing to combine well.

3. For the truffle popcorn: Combine the remaining melted butter (or black truffle butter) and the truffle oil, and drizzle evenly on the remaining popcorn. Season with salt and/or truffle salt to taste and serve.

Variations:
For wasabi popcorn: Crush two tablespoons of Wasabi peas in a blender until fine breadrumb texture. Sprinkle over buttered popcorn to taste.

For smoky popcorn: Add three drops liquid smoke to the melted butter before drizzling onto the popcorn. If desired, substitute smoked salt for the regular kosher salt.

Wine Pairing:
Toasty, barrel-fermented Chardonnays are the perfect match for buttery popcorn, while smoky and herb seasoned popcorns harmonize with the smoky, herbaceous elements of a Cabernet Sauvignon and showcase the wine’s dusky fruit perfectly. For the most flexible popcorn pairing, pop the cork on a Brut sparkling wine, whose lively acidity and yeasty quality are a great partner to the buttery, toasty taste of popcorn.

Ok, so I have two stories for you.  One I know for sure is a hoax, the other is most likely a hoax.  Nonetheless, I think they are fun and entertaining so I’m sharing them with you – aren’t you lucky?!!

Popcorn & Opera

July 9, 2008

Popcorn & Opera….that’s two words you don’t expect to see together! However, many movie theaters are now offering more than just blockbuster viewing in an attempt to bring in business and the Galaxy 14 Cine in Rochester, MN is on the cutting edge of this new trend.

“The idea is to draw more people to the destination, in this case a movie theater. Whether patrons arrive for a blockbuster movie, a live play or an opera, they’re also likely to buy popcorn and other refreshments.”

The full story can be read here at the Post Bulletin.

I recently came across this interesting article in the “Vancouver Sun” entitled “Boats, bike and don’t forget the cereal“. The article opens with….

“It’s hard enough knowing what to pack just to go to China as a tourist. Imagine what it’s like packing for the whole Canadian Olympic team that’s competing in 30 different sports.”

and then goes on to explain how they pack, what they pack etc, etc.  The most interesting thing to me was the following excerpt:

“Popcorn was on the athletes’ wish lists. But the Chinese said no. Unless it’s already popped, popcorn is classified as plant material and not allowed into the country. It was just one of the things that came up during the complicated process of pre-clearing Olympic goods.”

Poor things!  Fancy no popcorn allowed!!  I feel bad for them and hope at least they thought to bring along the pre-popped kind to satisfy their cravings!
